"Can I Really Earn £45,000 a Year?"

The information below is based on facts from 17 years of teaching Driving Instructor Students. The training & learner lesson prices are what Catz-i.com ADiT charge at 03 March 2019. All tests assume a first time pass.

Once you have had 40 hours of Part 3 training, you may opt for a 'Trainee Licence'. You will need to be sponsored by your trainer and this allows you to receive payment for giving tuition. Without a trainee licence, it is a criminal offence to receive payment of any sort for giving tuition.

The licence is valid for 6 months (26 weeks) and you will be supplied with students on a franchise agreement.

You DO NOT "have to" take a Trainee Licence and you should take careful consideration with this. Larger training organisations encourage you to 'Fast-Track', where after paying £3,800 their only interest is to get you on a Trainee Licence as soon as possible, where you will be supplied a Mini and a fee of £235 per week on a 12 month contract and if you change your mind, it's only a £5,000

Firstly lets look at what you are likely to spend on training;

Part 1 Course:

Part 1 Test Fee^

Part 2 Training 12 - 18 hours:

Part 2 Test Fee^

Part 3 Training 40 hours:

Trainee Licence^

£0179.99     -     £0179.99

£081.000     -     £0081.00

£0111.00      -     £0111.00

£1400.00     -     £1400.00

£0140.00     -     £0140.00

Total Projected Spend:           £2331.99      -    £2541.99

Decissions

Depending on your circumstances, you are advised not to leave a secure job to pursue a trainee licence. Whilst our pass rate is 94% (DVSA national average pass rate 33%), I have sat in on some Part 3 tests where the candidate has turned to jelly and it has not gone to plan. Regardless of how well you do in training, it's about how you perform on test and 6% (DVSA national fail rate 67%) still don't make it. Trainee licences are always subject to availability in your area and whilst you have a 99% chance to earn back everything you have spent, there is other costs involved, as detailed below.

Expectations

No driving school can fill your diary straight away and you should expect to have a period of building your diary. To my knowledge at time of writing, we are the only franchise that has a teired franchise system, where you pay a base price of £20p/w, followed by increases as you are supplied 5, 10 & 15 students etc. We believe that this is the fairest and since our income is dependent on what we supply you, it's in our interest to keep you busy.

We don't believe in hiding from paying students that you are on a Trainee Licence and as such we charge less to the customer. Our current price of a lesson with an ADI is £30p/h & with a Trainee £27p/h. This is the figure used for the calculations. No quarantees can ever be made, however all figures quotes are based on factual evidence.

Projected Weekly Income On A Trainee Licence

Teaching 12 hours per week: X £27p/h =   £324.00

Teaching 16 hours per week: X £27p/h =   £432.00

Teaching 20 hours per week: X £27p/h =   £540.00

Teaching 24 hours per week: X £27p/h =   £648.00

Teaching 32 hours per week: X £27p/h =   £864.00

Teaching 36 hours per week  X £27p/h =   £972.00

Projected Weekly Income After Qualification

Teaching 12 hours per week X £30p/h  =    £0360.00

Teaching 16 hours per week: X £30p/h =    £0480.00

Teaching 20 hours per week: X £30p/h =    £0600.00

Teaching 24 hours per week: X £30p/h =    £0720.00

Teaching 32 hours per week: X £30p/h =    £0960.00

Teaching 36 hours per week: X £30p/h =    £1080.00

***HOWEVER...

Based on the figures above working 32 hours per week, it 'appears that your income for your FIRST Financial Year: looks Amazing! BUT... expenses then need to be taken from your earnings and are calculated below:

£22,464.00 + £24,960.00 = £47,424.00 for your first financial year and this is called 'Earnings'. However there's several factors to deduct from this figure.

You have 4 weeks holiday with no income:  -£3,840.00

You have 2 cancelations a week over 48 working weeks:

                                                                     -£2,880.00

Training complete & passed your tests 1st time time & DVSA registration fees are paid:                  -£2,541.99

During your 1st year, you will pay a franchise fee. This may vary geographically. A Catz-i.com ADiT franchise costs up to £56.00 per week. This equates to:

                                                                      -£2,496.00

Compulsory training whilst on a Trainee Licence (most hide this pricing in the small print)                -£1,400.00

New 'Dual Controls' purchase and fitted.     -£0,200.00 (you can normally find these on Ebay at half the price).

Insurance (based on a 25yr old driver with no penalty points and non fault accidents in the last 5 years in a Vauxhall Corsa)                                            -£0,320.00

Vehicle Lease Agreement                            -£2,388.00

Fuel & Vehicle Expenses                             -£2,200.00\

Therefore...

In your first year your projected  Income £47,424.00 minus Outlays £17,545.99

1st Financial Year

= £29,878.01

No guarantees can ever be made, however all figures quotes are based on factual evidence.

*Prices vary between regions, however we will always aim for quality, before profit. A CLEAR price will be given to you before you comite to a Trainee Licence. This may be carried out by an affiliate of Catz-i.com ADiT and always subject to availability.
